Tips on a Happy Marriage for Working Moms
Tips on a Happy Marriage for Working MomsTips on a Happy Marriage for Working MomsAfter working all day, feeding the family, cleaning the kitchen and putting the kids to bed, the last thing on your mind is how to build a happy marriage. But a happy marriage is the foundation for your familys well-being. It deserves your attention. If you take a few minutes every day to focus on keeping your marriage happy, everyone will be better off including you. Date Night Works Its the oldest piece of advice for a reason date night really helps keep your marriage happy. You dont need to have a standing babysitter every Friday night, like Barack and Michelle Obama, but you must devote one-on-one time to your spouse on a regular basis. The work of raising children and supporting a family is all consuming. Its easy for your marriage to become an afterthought. When you have a regular time set aside, youre forced to build that connection. If youre concerned about the cost of child care for a wee kly date night, get creative. Can you ask a neighbor to sit in your house during the kids nap on Saturday afternoon so you can get out for coffee as a couple? Or consider having a regular date morning breakfast after the kids get on the school bus. You can negotiate flexible hours at work to accommodate arriving an hour late. As a bonus, youll be alert and fresh. You may even find conversation flows more easily and you have more energy for your spouse compared with dinner at the end of a long week. Think of Your Spouse First Imagine if every morning you woke up asking, How can I make my husbands day as special and wonderful as possible? And if he woke asking the same question? Youd be guaranteed a happy marriage. Now I realize thats not a realistic daily occurrence. We so often wake up thinking, Is it my turn to bring snack for soccer practice? But if you at least try to put your spouse or partener first, and he does the same for you, youll be a step ahead. And those times when you each think of the other first? Its as beautiful a moment as reading a classic O. Henry story. Communicate With Words A happy marriage would be simple if we all could read minds. Unfortunately, my husband communicates best by hearing words that I speak. Im betting yours does too. Dont expect your spouse to guess why youre upset or to know what will help you. You have to ask for what you need, whether its time alone or a big hug or for him to pick up his dirty socks from the floor. Trust me, hell thank you for spelling out the solution to your badeanstalt mood. He loves you more than anyone in the world he wants to fix the problem. When you ask for what you need, whether its emotional support or household chores, it helps to use the manners mama taught you. The same request comes off very differently if its done with a smile and a hug, as opposed to a whiny tone or angry face. Say Thank You and Sorry And while Im on the topic, many a marriage has been saved by a well-tim ed apology. Even if you dont think you did anything wrong, cant you honestly say that youre sorry to see your spouse so upset? When your partner is furious or hurt, the most important thing is to hear his anger. Dont get defensive and launch into explanations. Let him know you are listening by giving the gift of empathy. It wont kill you to say Im sorry, and it may just take the wind out of his sails. Certainly, it allows him to admit he might have been in the wrong also. And when your husband does something special for you, even if you had to ask for it, make sure to say thank you. There are other much-appreciated ways to reward a man, so consider one of those too. Touch Each Other That brings us to the bedroom. Yes, a fulfilling sex life is an integral part of many happy marriages. But just as important are the hugs, kisses and casual touches that remind you of the time when you met and fell in love. Before kids, before the mortgage, before the bills. When youre raising babies and young children, their physical demands can be exhausting, especially for moms. So you need to make a conscious decision to save some energy for a physical connection with your husband too even if it means leaving the laundry or the email or the thank you notes for another day. You may not be in the mood. You may feel uncomfortable with your post-baby body. But if you start to let your sex life slide, you can quickly become little more than roommates with the man who was once the love of your life. And you may find that once you start feeling romantic and enjoying intimacy again, you tap into your pre-mommyhood libido. Assume Good Intentions Our society is so focused on grievance and complaint. Its easy to develop a narrative in your head about what your spouse has done wrong and how to put upon you are. Keeping mental lists of wrongdoing is a sure recipe for drama and turbulence in your home. Instead, try to think of a positive reason that he might have for acting the way he did. Maybe he forgot to pick up the kids at daycare because he was working hard to support your family. Maybe he ignored your mother-in-laws nasty comment about working moms because he didnt hear it. Maybe he was going to get to the dirty dishes in the sink after the kids were asleep, and then he got distracted by the bills. Your made-up explanation may not be the right one, but thinking through the alternatives gives you space to imagine that there are valid reasons for his actions. The next step ask him what was going on. You can even have the conversation on date night

Why an Emergency Fund Should Be Part of Your Career Plan
Why an Emergency Fund Should Be Part of Your Career Plan Why an Emergency Fund Should Be Part of Your Career Plan As you progressin your career, finding a new job can become harder and harder. One of the big reasons for this has to do with salary. When you first start working, you are generally open to just about any job and will happily take a tiny paycheck. However, as you rise through the ranks of your industry, your salary requirements will evolve. One challenging situation that many job seekers face is when they want to leave a job but are financially unable to. In general, one of two scenarios is preventing the job seeker from leaving They are either living right up to their means and spending every dollar they make each month, or they do not have a safety net in the fasson of an emergency fund.A job seeker with no emergency fund who needs every dollar to pay their basic bills feels trapped. Its even worse if the job seeker is being treated poorly at work They cant financially a fford to leave, butthey cant emotionally afford to stay.Dont Get Trapped Start an Emergency FundTo protect yourself from gettingtrapped in a scenario like the one described above, do two things.First, scale back your fixed expenses if possible. Then, take the extra money youre saving each month and put it into a savings account. That account will serve as your emergency fund. Ideally, your emergency fund should carry you through six months of living expenses. I recommend keeping your emergency fund in a savings account because itwill be protected from market fluctuations that way.Creating an emergency fund takes time and dedication. Its not something you can do overnight, and its not easy. But if you feel stuck in a bad work situation, think about how much differently you might feel if you knew you had six months of living expenses in an account just in case. The benefits of an emergency fund cant be overstressed. Having a backup plan gives you room to breathe and the power to walk a way from jobs (if necessary) without having to worry about how youll pay rent.Along these same lines, when you land a new job that pays more, dont immediately jump to increase your fixed monthly expenses. A new house or car may be tempting, but give yourself a chance to decide that you really like your new job first and that the company really likes you. The last thing you want is to lose that job and be stuck with living expenses that reflect your lost income. The bottom line is this. Things can (and will) go wrong at work. You may get a bad boss. Your company may go through layoffs. But if you manage your finances carefully, youll give yourself an out. And, in the end, youll create both breathing room andprofessional freedom.A version of this article originally appeared in theMemphis Daily News.Angela Copeland is a career coach and CEO at her firm,Copeland Coaching.

Designing Tools for NASA Unlocks Skill-Building Opportunities for ME Major at the Univ. of Alabama
entwurfing Tools for NASA Unlocks Skill-Building Opportunities for ME Major at the Univ. of Alabama Designing Tools for NASA Unlocks Skill-Building Opportunities for ME Major at the Univ. of Alabama Designing Tools for NASA Unlocks Skill-Building Opportunities for ME Major at the Univ. of Alabamaby Alaina G. LevinePublished July 2016Alex Mitchell grew up on the space coast of Florida in the shadow of Cape Canaveral. He always knew he wanted to work in the space industry, and pursued a bachelors in mechanical engineering at the University of Alabama (UA) to make it happen. But it welches his involvement in ASME that catapulted his cosmos-career aspirations into the stratosphere. In 2015, NASA announced a design challenge, in which undergraduates from around the nation were charged with designing, building, and testing a tool or device that addresses a current need in space exploration. The program, entitled the Micro-g Neutral Buoyancy Experiment Design Teams (Micro-g NExT), gave stude nts the opportunity to engage in developing the tool which, if chosen, would then be tested in the simulated microgravity environment of the NASA Johnson Space Center Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL).The Universities Float sample grabber prototype. Photo credit Alex MitchellMitchell jumped at the chance to participate in a real-life space exploration project. He and his colleague Stephen Peter Rowe led their fellow team mates, ASME members and Society of Women Engineers members alike, to form 2 teams and submit 2 proposals to this program. The first proposal, led by Mitchell, was called Understanding Asteroids and aimed to design a float sample grabber, which could be deployed from a spacecraft, to collect small, loose asteroid samples for further scientific exploration. The second proposal team led by Rowe, named halbgerade, focused on designing a eu-agrarpolitik Spanner Boom, a device that astronauts could use to traverse the distance between a spacecraft and an asteroid The purp ose of this boom was to operate with the Orion, a newly designed spacecraft for taking a crew to an asteroid or other planets, which will be docked to an Asteroid Redirect Vehicle (ARV). A gap of 56-inches will exist between the Orion and ARV, which must be traversed by astronauts without damaging delicate heating shield tiles on the Orion, explains Mitchell. The Gap Spanner Boom is the tool to help astronauts move through this distance. The teams started planning their projects in August 2015, submitted their letters of intent at the beginning of October, and finalized their proposals, with a proof of concept of their tools, by the end of October 2015. In early December, they received notice of acceptance of both proposals and since then, have been designing and building the tools. NASA accepted only 25 teams nationwide for this program, and UA was the only university to have 2 teams represented. Its pretty amazing that Im involved in building tools for NASA, he says. Its not someth ing I expected to be doing in my undergrad experience. In May and June 2016, the two teams ventured to NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston to landlandsee their prototypes tested in the same pool where astronauts train for space missions. At that point, NASA could take the tool and use it as is, or redesign it or learn from it to design a better tool, explains Mitchell. They have intellectual rights to our tools and designs. In addition to the technical facets of the project, the teams considered outreach a vital component, and they received an ASME Diversity Action Grant to facilitate community engagement. We wanted to get people excited about engineering and science, especially those who dont have much of a chance to access this stuff, he says. The team approached elementary and middle schools and arranged for visits in which the ME students gave presentations about space exploration and careers in space and at NASA. They also conducted workshops for the kids, where they had the opp ortunity to build their own float sample grabbers. As the team members guided the children in designing their own tools, the kids learned the fundamentals of the scientific method, team-based problem-solving, and logic and analysis.Team STRAHL (left to right) Rene Gromotka, Logan Cook, Hope Thompson, Andrew Sanders (Missing - Andrew Sanders) speak to students about NASAs Path to Mars. Photo credit Andrew SandersThe teams interacted directly with upwards of 500 students at 6 schools, ranging from a technology magnet school to inner city schools with limited resources for STEM education. Some of the kids are in low income areas, so the chance to give them this opportunity to see the stuff is touching, he says. They also presented to 250 kids as part of the February 2016 Engineering Day at McWane Science Center, a regional science museum in Birmingham, AL. The ASME members strove to not only engage younger students in the projects but also ignite their passion for space and engineering problem solving. At the high- and magnet schools, the kids designed a robot, describes Mitchell. One of the magnet schools has a robotics team and so we tasked them with converting their robot to a sample grabber and then we competed with them with our tool. The impact was significant and clear, notes Mitchell. The teachers specifically remarked that their pupils not only enjoyed their presentation but found great value in it. We had younger kids who didnt understand that some career paths draw from engineering, such as pilots, and professionals who work on space missions, that they get their start with these subjects, he says. It was eye-opening for them, that these degrees, mechanical engineering in particular, give them a wide range of career paths later in life. One third grader said he wanted to be a pilot. We told him that pilots and other similar military professionals require a background in engineering. It was great to see that really struck a chord with him and made him wa nt to engage with the lesson. Not surprisingly, the entire project struck a chord with Mitchell and his team as well, as there was much value gained. On the technology front, he expanded his knowledge of material properties and interfaces, as well as machine shop and engineering design. The team used a 3D printer to construct the tool, so they learned about the complexity of using this manufacturing method for rapid prototyping of the parts. But it was the opportunity to hone his capacity for leadership that benefited him the most. He oversaw 1 team of 6 students and coordinated simultaneously with Rowe and his team over the course of an entire school year. I had experience running student design projects, but this was a different animal, he says. It was a learning experience in time management and coordinating others.Strong communications was an essential element of the projects success. Mitchell discovered the importance of adapting his communication methods depending upon the need s and preferences of the individual team member. Furthermore, there were plenty of opportunities to hone skills in a diversity of communication mechanisms, from social media to promote the teams progress, to technical documentation required by NASA, to public speaking as part of the outreach. Near the end we had to submit multiple documents for multiple people, put together a final report and poster for the university as well as for NASA, and do outreach, he says. A lot of things were going on at the same time. And I knew I had definitely improved as a leader because sometimes things fall through the cracks. But in this project, nothing fell. We were all pulling our own weight. There was delegation and motivation, and we all improved as a group, and I improved my own leadership skills.Reflecting back over the exciting year, Mitchell sees it as a win-win-win-win, for himself, his team members, the kids he presented too via the outreach, and even future UA ASME members. Its been a won derful experience and hopefully we can keep the door open with NASA to help other people get the same experience we got, he says. We want to help the UA chapter in the future, and the network of engineers coming up. I would definitely like to see them be in this career area.In May 2016, Mitchell graduated from the UA and is headed to Lockheed Martin to serve as a Mechanical Design engineer in Orlando, just a stones throw from Cape Canaveral. Mission Accomplished.

First hand raised, the right answer to every question, and a perfectly painted solar system science project to top it all off- the token overachiever. And while you may have scoffed at his or her overreaching ways, lets be honest Whenever the teacher had a special assignment, reward, or treat to give out, it usually went to that one kid who always went above and beyond.Turns out, the geschftszimmer isnt much different. When you want to prove your worth (e.g., during your first week on the job or while youre gunning for a promotion) youll want to be that person. Of course, you dont want to be that annoying person, drawing attention to yourself for the sake of showing off- you want to demonstrate your value by making a genuine impact on your team. So, how do you do it? To get you started, here are four ways to go above and beyond at work- without going over the top.1. Put Feedback Into ActionOne of the most impressive things you can do in your job is to strive to continually improve. (And alternatively, one of the worst things you can do is to make the same mistakes over and over again.) To do this, start by listening to the feedback you get from your manager and co-workers- and actually use it.When your boss casually mentions that you left out the index page of your report or that you landseemed a little timid in your presentation, pocket that information for later. The next time you have a similar assignment, put those corrections into action. As you continue to improve, your boss willbe impressed that youve put that feedback to good use- andwill realize that he or she doesnt have to worry about proofreading your work or putting you in front of a big meeting anymora.2. Anticipate NeedsIve actually already started on that is music to your managers ears- it means that instead of waiting for him or her to ask you to do something, youve already though t of it and taken action. And while it may be impossible to always read your managers mind, start by thinking back to your previous projects. When you turn in your monthly report, does your boss always throw in a Can you also you graph some of these numbers? Instead of waiting for that question to arise- again- complete the charts and turn them in with the report.Along the same lines, try to think about your department or company on a slightly higher level. Are you launching a new software update next week? Youll probably need to get your departments newest hire prepped for the impending influx of calls. Instead of waiting for your boss to ask you to go over those details with the new employee, take it upon yourself to teach him.3. Bring Your Ideas to the TableIf you have an idea thats going to improve efficiency, help you and your teammates perform your jobs better, or produce a financial boost for the company, your boss wants to hear about it. But to help you and your idea stand ou t even more- and increase the chance of it actually being executed- present it with a plan.I often have employees who will casually mention, We should really improve this process. But the main reason that process never actually gets fixed is that no one makes concrete suggestions as to *how * it should be done. But one day, a pair of employees came to me with a documented process, typed out step-by-step. They explained they had been working on it here and there in their spare time for the past few weeks, and thought it would be an excellent solution. And you know what? It was.If you bring an idea to the table with a plan, youll show your team and boss that youre prepared, innovative, and dedicated to constant improvement. And as a bonus, those ideas are much more likely to be turned into reality.4. Go Out of Your WayYouve probably heard some pretty crazy customer service stories- like the steakhouse that delivered dinner to a weary traveler as he arrived at the airport after a long flight- simply because he had posted a tweet requesting a steak just hours earlier. Or a grocery store that offered to deliver groceries for a snowed-in WWII veteran- even though the store didnt actually have a delivery service. And I know what you may be thinking Im not allowed to make extreme gestures like that. But no matter your companys resources or the leeway youre given to interact with your clients or co-workers, you can still go out of your way to make your interaction a little more memorable When its 450 PM and a client calls, answer the phone- even though youd like to just ignore it, pack up, and head home. When a customer makes a slightly strange request, see what you can do to make it happen instead of just replying, Sorry, I cant do that. Company policy. When you show this kind of commitment- everyone will notice. When you consistently incorporate these things into your daily life at work, youll quickly rise above the ranks. But more than being known as the employee whos just trying to elbow his or her way to a promotion, youll be seen as the employee who genuinely wants to see the department and team succeed.
